While preparing your trip to the Algarve, you surely read about the majestic Benagil Cave. It’s probably the most photographed sea cave in Portugal, maybe even the world. When going there, you’ll understand why 😉

Best things to do
The highlight of Benagil is its famous sea cave, accessible by sea. You can also relax on Praia de Benagil, or explore nearby hiking trails along the cliffs. Nearby fishertown Carvoeiro offers cute streets, shops, and restaurants for a day trip.
Getting around
It’s easiest to visit the Benagil area by car, especially for visiting nearby beaches and towns along the Algarve coast. However, if you’re staying in another seatown, like Portimão or Lagos, there are direct boat tours departing from there.
Can you walk to Benagil Cave?
No — Benagil Cave has no land entrance and is not accessible on foot or by climbing down the cliffs (it’s also illegal and dangerous to try). The cave can only be reached by boat, kayak, or paddleboard. Read our full walking-access guide →
How to get to Benagil Cave
Benagil is on the central Algarve coast, closest to Lagoa and Carvoeiro. We recommend reaching it via a nearby town rather than driving directly to the cave because parking at Benagil beach is very limited.
From Lagos
30 min drive, or take a direct boat tour from Lagos marina.
From Faro
45 min drive. Full Faro → Benagil guide
From Lisbon
2.5 hrs drive, or fly into Faro. Full Lisbon → Benagil guide
Albufeira, Portimão & Vilamoura
20–35 min drive; direct boat tours depart from all three.
Beaches, food & where to stay

The best beaches in Benagil
Right next to the famous sea cave, you’ll find a cute beach, Praia de Benagil. This beach is rather small and can get packed, especially during high season. You can also explore lesser known beaches in the area like Praia da Corredoura, accessible only from the sea (kayak or SUP).
Benagil Cave vs. Ponta da Piedade — which should you choose?
Short answer: Benagil is the iconic sea cave with the famous circular skylight; Ponta da Piedade is a dramatic cliff-and-grotto coastline better for exploring by kayak at your own pace. Many tours combine both. Full comparison →
Where and what to eat
Benagil’s dining scene focuses on fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes — grilled sardines and octopus salad at O Pescador, or fresh fish with sea views at Restaurante Litoral. Nearby Carvoeiro adds more options, including Onze Restaurant.
Where to stay
Being a small village, Benagil’s accommodation is limited to guesthouses and apartments — a quiet retreat by the coast. Nearby Carvoeiro offers beachfront resorts and aparthotels. Be aware that August gets very busy here.
Visiting Benagil Cave with kids
Family-friendly options exist — look for tours under 1.5 hours with calm-water speedboats or catamarans rather than kayak/SUP tours, which need some paddling ability. Life jackets are provided on all tours, and most operators welcome children from age 4+.
