Peniche is probably most famous nowadays for Supertubos, the world-class surfspot that is also a stop at the WSL Tour, bringing the world’s best surfers to this little town every autumn! Therefore it’s no secret anymore, that the waves in Peniche and in the neighbour village Baleal are among the best in Portugal! This attracts thousands of surfers every year to this little peninsula, just about 1-hour drive away from Lisbon!
However, you can also spend some great time off from surfing wandering through the historic town of Peniche. The fortress of Peniche is very impressive! And of course you should visit the natural reserve Ilhas Berlengas! This group of islands remains almost completely untouched, and is home to a big variety of seabirds and other impressive flora and fauna! So Peniche is a great spot to spend your holidays or to go for a day trip if you’re staying in Lisbon. And if you like surfing, you’ll love the surfer vibe and waves in and around Peniche!
