The Amalfi Coast is part of Italy, so the official language is Italian. The currency in the Amalfi Coast is the Euro. Most people working in the tourism area speak good English, and even German is spoken in many areas of the Amalfi Coast.

If you speak to the older generation, communication can be more difficult. People are very happy if you try to speak a few basic Italian words, and it helps to communicate if you venture out outside the typical tourist areas.

Getting around in Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast has one of the most scenic streets in the world, the so-called Amalfi Drive. This is the name given to the road SS163, that connects all the towns around the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Drive is quite a special road, thanks to the amazing views but also tricky due to the many steep curves.

The best way to get around in the Amalfi Coast depends on what you would like to do. If you want to explore the region fully and at your own rhythm, renting a car or scooter is the best way to do so. However, you need to pay full attention when driving as the Amalfi Drive is not the easiest road and in summer it can get very busy. Car and scooter rentals are easy to find in the region, or you can just pick it up at Naples airport when arriving there. From Naples, you can also take a train to any of the towns in Amalfi Coast and then decide whether or not you would like to rent a car or scooter.

If you are looking to visit only the main towns, using the local bus services is the best way to do so as there is only very little parking in the towns. The bus system in Amalfi Coast connects all major towns and is very easy to handle. Just be aware that due to heavy traffic in summer the schedules can vary quite a lot.

There are also taxis available for short distances, which is, of course, more relaxed but also more expensive than taking the bus. Within the towns, you are best off simply walking the extra metre by foot while enjoying the view of the sea, the cliffs and the cute roads.
