Dolphins Albufeira

Dolphin watching experience in the Algarve

This summer we decided to try out the Algarve, Portugal for our yearly family summer holidays. We did some homework before booking everything and figured out that the best timing, also considering my job and my husband’s, would be the last two weeks of July. So, we then booked our flights, back in January and were lucky with a great deal for the four of us. We were going to travel with our two daughters, Laura (12) and Sarah (9).

Regarding the exact location in the Algarve, we followed the suggestion of my friend Caroline, who last year spent an amazing two weeks in Alvor. Alvor is a little typical fishing village in between the two cities Lagos and Portimão, about one hour drive from Faro Airport. We stayed in the apartments Caroline recommended and which were great since we had a shared pool and the girls loved it!

Alvor Portugal

Alvor is worth a visit, especially during sunset!

There are a lot of things to do in the Algarve, many cute villages and towns to visit, waterparks, stunning beaches for all tastes and delicious and good priced restaurants. The main highlight was, with no doubt and for the four of us, the dolphin watching tour from Albufeira. Again, we followed the recommendations of my friend and booked the earliest trip, at 8AM. The dolphin watching trips are very popular and that’s why we booked three days in advance on the internet, on SeaBookings.

On the day we booked, we woke up very early but it was not a big thing because we were all very excited to make a dream come true and meet wild dolphins in their natural environment. We prepared some nice sandwiches for breakfast to eat in the car since it was a 40min drive. In the Albufeira Marina it’s easy to park your car and we were 15min before departure at the tour operator’s office. After a safety briefing and short introduction about what to expect, the fully booked boat left the Marina on time.

Dolphin watching experience in the Algarve

The RIBs are really fast. The girls loved it!

The boat we went on was a so-called rigid inflatable passenger boat originally designed for rescue reasons and adapted to this activity. There are also other boats on which you can go dolphin watching like sailboats and catamarans. All kind of boats have got their pros and cons, but the pros of this boat are surely its security, speed and the fact that we sit very close to the water allowing an even more intimate interaction with the dolphins.

Within about a quarter of an hour, we found the first pod of wildlife. We were pretty lucky and got to see 10 to 15 dolphins that came so close to the boat that we were almost able to touch them. Thanks to the clear water we could not only see them on the surface but also underwater. To our surprise, there were two dolphin-moms that brought their babies along! It was beautiful to see how the mother and baby dolphins move together as is they were one.

It's hard to make good pictures!

It’s hard to make good pictures!

I think we spent about fifteen minutes with this pod of dolphins when the skippers suggested us to go a little more in the west direction because there were strong indications that would encounter another dolphin species there – bottlenose dolphins. The passengers agreed and as such, after sailing for about twenty minutes in West direction, some seagulls helped us to spot another pod of dolphins and in fact, it were the bottlenose ones. It’s common to find dolphins near seagulls because usually it on spots with plenty of fish.

Some came really close to the boat

Some came really close to the boat

This pod of dolphins was a little smaller (about 8) and had no babies but the dolphins gave us a real show jumping around the water! It was great! We had a lot of fun and made very nice pictures to show at home. We followed this group of dolphins for a while until it was time to head back to the Marina. On this last bit on the boat, the skipper made some fun curves and slides and I and the girls screamed as if we were on a rollercoaster!

The sights are stunning!

The sights are stunning!

When we got back to the Marina, it was time for some coffee and we stayed on the beach in Albufeira for the rest of the day.

If you are questioning booking a trip with dolphin watching, just call and book. You won’t regret it. It’s an amazing experience, both the boat trip itself and the special encounter with dolphins.

sailing excursion in Albufeira

We went on a sailing excursion in Albufeira

When Carlos called us to become part of the SeaBookings’ family, we were super excited to get to know his vintage sailing boat. So, we decided to join Carlos and Bijuca, his guide, on a sailing excursion in Albufeira with friends.

private sailing in Albufeira

Carlos’ authentic 47’’ long sail yacht from 1978

Carlos and Bijuca do half day sailing tours in a group or private charters for a half or a full day. We decided to join them for a half day sailing excursion in Albufeira on Carlos’ authentic 47’’ long sail yacht from 1978.

Even the interior of this sailing yacht is vintage!

Even the interior of this sailing yacht is vintage!

The boat is truly unique. Docked at Gate 5 in the Marina of Albufeira, this charming sailing yacht was already waiting for us. The boat is super spacious and the major part of it is made out of wood which gives it a very special touch. There’s space in the back by the rudder, even more in the back next to the dinghy or in front on the deck. And did you know this boat has 2 masts?

sailing trip in Albufeira

Did you know the boat has two masts

Carlos and Bijuca, our hosts are true sailing lovers. Carlos came from Huelva to Albufeira to follow his heart and work with boats. And Bijuca, originally from Lisbon, did the same. This sailing excursion in Albufeira is different than most other boat tours in the sense that the guides will not be continuously talking. The guides are happy to share all they know about the beaches and rock formations you’ll sail by and any other curiosities you’d like to know. If you prefer, you can just sit back and listen to the waves and the wind.

sailing charter in Albufeira

You can choose where you want to sit

We did this tour with a group of friends and Lu, a 4-year-old. We had a great time. Some of us at the rudder, chatting to Carlos and Bijuca to find out more about this special boat and others chilling at the front deck. It was a beautiful day and surely one of the highlights was to anchor and go for a dive. Even the 4-year-old jumped into the refreshing water and enjoyed the feeling of swimming in the deep waters of the Atlantic. Another highlight was the impressive sights of the coast of the Algarve. On this 3 hour tour, which ended up being, 3,5 hours, we even had time to cruise by the famous cave of Benagil! Unfortunately, there was no wind at all so we could not set sail and switch off the engine. However, on most days in the Algarve, Carlos turns of the engine on the way back to Albufeira so you can enjoy the feeling of sailing. Feeling the power of the wind is unique!

The wind and the sea make you hungry and thirsty. Luckily, Bijuca and Carlos had thought of this and served cold drinks all along the tour. On halfway, Bijuca turned up with a big board full of cheese, salmon, ham and all kind of savory snacks and even fresh fruit skewers. On the half day trips, these snacks are not included, only a drink. But on the charters, you’ll have this delicious treat!

We strongly recommend this sailing excursion in Albufeira if you’re looking for an authentic sea experience during your stay in the Algarve. It’s a great thing to do with family and friends. Doing the tour with a group or on a private basis depends on the size of your group and your budget. Obviously, on a private basis is even more unique as you can go where you want and stop where and when you want.

Parasailing Algarve

Because it combines the ocean and the sky while adrenaline flows through your body,  parasailing Algarve is one of the most exciting ways to explore your holiday destination.

Don’t you know this awesome watersport? Parasailing is also known as parascending or parakiting and is a recreational kiting activity where you are towed behind a boat (or a car, in some cases), in the air, while attached to a specially designed canopy wing that looks like a parachute – the parasail wing. If the boat is powerful enough, two or three people can parasail behind it at the same time.

parasailing albufeira children

Parasailing Algarve Albufeira Portugal – with children

Parasailing can be done all over the world, both behind a boat or on land, behind a car. In the Algarve, Portugal, and other coastal holiday destinations, parasailing is usually done behind a boat. However, throughout Europe, land-based parasailing has been transformed into a competition sport. In land-based competition parasailing, the parasail hangs behind a 4 wheel drive vehicle and is towed to maximum height. The idea is that the driver releases the tow line and the parasailer flies to a target area in an accuracy competition. This sport and its competitions were developed in the early 80’s and has been very popular ever since.

Are you the one who has always dreamed of going boat-parasailing but were afraid to do it alone? Imagine the feeling of soaring high above the Algarve coastline and exploring all the sites from a bird’s-eye perspective together with your best friend or family member!

We went to try our parasailing in the Algarve ourselves. Check out the video of parasailing in Lagos (more about our experience here):

parasailing albufeira - things to do algarve

Parasailing is one of the best things to do in the Algarve

Parasailing Algarve is, in fact, the perfect activity for the most fearless people! After receiving a full safety briefing, you’ll get on board of a speed boat and step into the adventure of flying alone up to 120 meters or tandem up to 40-meter height above bays of Lagos, Vilamoura or Albufeira and enjoy the spectacular and unique view.

In Lagos, parasailing can be done on your own or with two people (tandem) and in Vilamoura or Albufeira you can even go parasailing with three people! The maximum height is 150m. Do you dare?

The expert crew of the three locations’ tour operators are accredited and have an extensive curriculum of successful flights. Parasailing in Lagos, Vilamoura or Albufeira is a must if you’re on holidays in the Algarve and like adrenaline! Special care will be taken for the safety of your flight from the moment you take off until the moment you get back on the boat.

Parasailing Algarve

You can go Parasailing Algarve with two people at once!

In general, one of the advantages of this water sport is that it can be done whole year round as long as the sea conditions are suitable, also because it’s suitable for all ages, since parents can go with their young kids.

We recommend you not to forget to bring sunscreen, swimming gear and a towel, a snack and water too because it’s a sport in the end and you’ll get hungry and thirsty. Also, we suggest booking in advance as parasailing Algarve depends upon weather conditions and is a very popular activity during the busy summer months!

By Cláuda and Zé, friends of SeaBookings, who were very curious about our new Benagil cave tour from Portimão:

Benagil tour from Portimão

The whole family will have fun on this Benagil tour from Portimão

The Algarve is a must-visit destination in Portugal for its beautiful beaches and sunny days. While it is an amazing place for sunbathing, it is also full of stunning views and secret beaches along the coastline. You’ll only discover these places on a boat trip.

During my summer holidays, I was staying in Lagoa with my boyfriend and we wanted to enjoy the beautiful coast of this region, so we chose SeaBookings to help us find the perfect experience.

Explore the unique rock formations

We went on a Benagil cave tour from Portimão, which is quite close to Lagoa and it was also a good excuse to visit that city. We had to check-in at Clube Naval de Portimão 10 minutes before the departure time. After parking the car for free, near the check-in point, we were welcomed by the friendly staff. They provided us with bottles of fresh water for the trip.

The boats take 18 people

The tour departs from Portimão in direction of Ferragudo, where we have a very cool view of Marina of Portimão and all the beaches nearby. As we leave Portimão, we start discovering the magic coastline and its amazing sea caves. The boat enters in some of these grottoes and we can appreciate the thrilling rock formations that look like something out of a pirate movie. The “Algares”, the openings to the sky are unique, being the “Algar of Benagil” the most famous in this region.

Once we arrive at Praia de Marinha, the staff dared us to dive into the amazing and refreshing blue sea. This was definitely the cherry on top of this already wonderful experience. Being able to take a refreshing dive during this Benagil cave tour from Portimão is a big plus compared to other similar toursAs the tour finishes, we had a very exciting way back journey at a thrilling but safe higher speed!

Albufeira Holiday Tips

Albufeira Holiday Tips

Albufeira, surrounded by 20 very different beaches to choose from, hugs the coast in Portugal’s southern Algarve region. It’s definitely one of the most popular tourist destinations in Portugal, for many reasons: great weather, all your round, stunning beaches, delicious cuisine and wild nightlife. Are you coming to Albufeira soon? After having booked your flights and stay, we are happy to give you some inside information about one of our favourite cities in the Algarve.

Praia da Falésia

Praia da Falésia

 Beaches in Albufeira

Albufeira is very rich in a broad variety of beaches. Our favourite four are Praia da Falésia, Praia de São Rafael, Praia da Galé and Praia Olhos de Água. Praia da Falésa  – is a fantastic 6-7km long sandy beach with plenty of beach bars and sun-loungers. From this beach, you can do some watersports as there are motorised watersports available. The crystal clear water is very clean and good for safe-bathing. We recommend a walk along the beach to Vilamoura with beautiful views. It’s a beautiful walk where the beach bars provide ideal pit-stops. If you do not want to walk back and get a taxi, you can do so, but only from the Vilamoura Marina because taxis don’t go on the dirt tracks of the beach.

A bit smaller, Praia de São Rafael is absolutely stunning too and a must-see for another in the area! This beach is also sandy but surrounded by cliff face, caves and fascinating rock formations, which makes it popular on windy days. São Rafael has got one reasonably priced snack bar/restaurant. Things to do in Albufeira Portugal

Praia da Galé is massive and is known for its beautiful white sand. Another beach where the sea is very clear and ideal to swim in. The local beach bar is a nice place to have lunch since it serves fresh fish every day. Spoil yourself with a nice massage on the beach (10 euros for 15 minutes) and get a really relaxed holiday feeling!

Praia Olhos de Água is an old favourite since it’s close enough to Albufeira to go back and forth. It’s a rather busy and touristy beach but nice to alternate between the quieter one. There are many little Portuguese restaurants and bars.

The coastline around Albufeira is stunning

Things to do in Albufeira

For the ones who love the ocean, Albufeira is a real paradise. You can just go for a refreshing dive in the Atlantic or choose one of the many ocean-related activities provided. The dolphin watching tours are definitely the most popular ones. Just pick the kind of boat you like most, from speedy rigid inflatable boats to comfortable catamarans, and get a board on this adventure. The BBQ tours, as well as the Pirate cruise, are very popular too, in particular for families. For the most audacious and looking for more intimate contact with the Atlantic, why not go for a scuba diving experience. All experiences related to the ocean are available to book online and we recommend booking in advance in order to avoid disappointments of fully booked tours.

Let’s make some dust! The off-road tours are the ideal option exciting afternoon with the whole family. Quad Ventura will take you into the hills around the Albufeira region for some adrenaline! We ensure you, from the beginning to the end, a well organised, friendly and safe trip. The quad bikes are suitable for kids over 8 years and the guides will take their time to adapt the route to all levels of experience. The Algarve quad bike tours are not about speed; they are about funIt’s about allowing you to take in the beauty of the Algarve, where you will discover beautiful old villages, plunging valleys, and so much unspoilt terrain. We would recommend this trip to anyone visiting Albufeira!

Restaurants and nightlife in Albufeira

Our favorite restuarant in Albufeira is Restaurant – Albufeira Gourmet . Traditional Portuguese dishes like the spare ribs and chicken are amazing, amongst the best we’ve ever had! It’s not fancy but combined with the low prices (Only €6 for chicken, chips and a soft drink!) and super friendly staff, this is the best choice in town if you want to grab a quick bite. Albufeira Gourmet is very easy to find; from the main road, just across the carpark to the left of Mc Donalds and the restaurants is in the street straight in front of you. You can have your meal (lunch or dinner) inside, on the few little tables outside or take it home with you.

One of our must-bars in Albufeira is Sherrys Bar. The extremely friendly and welcoming owners, Judith and Kevin, will do everything they can to make you feel welcome the moment you step into this cracking wee pub. At Sherry’s, all the drinks are low in price and big in measure and they serve the best pint of Guinness in Albufeira! In sum, it’s a great nightly entertainment where you’ll feel home.

Benagil or Ponta da Piedade

Benagil or Ponta da Piedade: Your best choice

Benagil or Ponta da Piedade?  What’s this about?

The Algarve is probably one of the most beautiful regions to visit during your summer holidays in the whole of Europe! At least we at SeaBookings are in love with the white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and cute little villages all along the coast from Tavira over Faro and Albufeira to the wild cliffs of Sagres. No wonder that the Algarve won the award for Europe’s Leading Beach Destination in 2017!

One thing the Algarve is especially famous for is the stunning rock formations. In the south of Portugal, you can admire some of the most impressive sea caves and grottos in the whole of Europe and actually the whole world. The two most famous caves are Benagil and Ponta da Piedade in Lagos.

Bootstour nach Ponta da Piedade

Stunning Ponta da Piedade in Lagos (by João Coelho)

The Benagil caves are really famous and are one of the top tourist attractions in Portugal. Even the famous paper The Huffington Post included the Benagil sea cave in their list of the 10 coolest caves around the world. But also the Ponta da Piedade in Lagos is one of the Must-Dos during your holidays in the Algarve! The beautiful rock formations at this spot will amaze you, we guarantee it! So, the question is: Benagil or Ponta da Piedade?

Luckily, the Algarve is not too big. So if you’re on holidays in the Algarve, you can actually visit both of the famous caves in Portugal. The best and quickest way to visit both is with a full day private boat tour, that will take you first to Benagil and then all the way to Lagos to see the Ponta da Piedade as well as all the other cute bays of the region. Our Private Boat tour to Benagil and Ponta da Piedade is probably the best option for you and your family or group of friends!

The caves of Benagil are very photogenic ;)

If you only want to visit one, Benagil or Ponta da Piedade, and need some help in deciding which one, let us help you! Benagil or Ponta da Piedade – we will help you make your best choice!

  1. Benagil caves

So as we already know, the Benagil caves are absolutely amazing! They are the top attraction of the Algarve by far. The natural beauty that was created by the pure force of the sea is just impressive. No wonder that so many people are attracted by this unique piece of art created by mother nature herself.

Benagil Tour von Portimo How to get from Lisbon to Benagil Bootstour nach Benagil von Lagos

Benagil is one of the most impressive caves of Europe (be aware that getting off the boat is not permitted on most tours)

The caves of Benagil are located near the town of Lagoa. The Benagil caves are great to visit especially if you’re staying around the area of Vilamoura, AlbufeiraCarvoeiro and Lagos, as they are located not even an hour away by car. Portimão is the nearest harbour to the Benagil cave. We actually have quite a lot of different boat tours from these destinations all going to Benagil. However, be aware that due to local regulations passengers are not allowed to get off the boat to walk around the beach of Benagil.

On a SUP tour you can explore the inside of the cave

On a SUP tour, you can explore the inside of the cave

If you actually want to walk around inside of the cave, the best ways to do so if with a Kayak tour or even with a Stand-Up Paddle tour! That way you can get really close to the fascinating rock formations and actually walk inside of the cave. Here you can also take the most beautiful pictures to show back home! Most tours to Benagil, be it by boat, kayak or SUP will take you to many different caves and rock formations. The arches of Praia da Marinha are also a highlight!

Benagil Grottenfahrt

The famous rock formations of Marinha are very near Benagil

The best time to visit the Benagil caves is actually after midday because that’s when the sun shines her light inside of the cave, creating a wonderful scenery. However, in the morning it can be better as there’s usually less wind and waves. During summer, it can get quite busy around the cave because it is so popular. But don’t worry, it is still absolutely fascinating and you will not be disappointed!

  1. Ponta da Piedade

The beautiful rock formations of Ponta da Piedade are just outside the centre of the authentic Portuguese little town called Lagos, a little further west than Benagil. The cute little beaches with the high cliffs and amazing rocks are characteristic of Lagos. Ponta da Piedade is the highlight of this scenery, with its impressive cliffs and caves.

kayak tours lagos - kayaktour

If you like to stay active during your holidays, we recommend this kayak tour

You can walk along the small paths all along the cliffs along Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Praia do Pinhão and stand on top of the edge of Ponta da Piedade looking out on the sea. But the best way to explore this natural beauty is from below, from the sea looking up! That’s when you really feel the power of nature!

Boat tours are definitely the most relaxed way to see the Ponta da Piedade and all the amazing region around it from up close. If you want to do something more sporty, we really recommend a kayak tour or even a Stand-Up Paddle tour. Especially the early morning SUP Grotto Tours in Lagos are amazing because you get to admire Ponta da Piedade while everybody else is still asleep!

boat tour to Benagil and Ponta da Piedade How to get around in the Algarve pic by João Coelho

You can walk to Ponta da Piedade or go by sea

So for all those staying further in the west end of the Algarve, Ponta da Piedade is geographically closer. But you can actually also get on a boat tour from Lagos to Benagil! So in this case – no more excuses, you just really should visit both caves during your holidays in the Algarve 😉

dolphin watching in Luz

We went dolphin watching in Luz

Part of our team was in the South of Portugal, the Algarve, for some meetings with tour operators. The weather was amazing and the ocean was “calling” us for a boat ride. Paulo, who manages our partner company in Praia da Luz, near Lagos, immediately invited us for a trip. And so, we went dolphin watching in Luz.

Praia da Luz, Vila da Luz, or simply Luz, is a very cute town, west of Lagos. It’s actually the beach where Femke and Bo grew up so, they have strong ties to this little summer paradise.

Welcome to Praia da Luz!

Welcome to Praia da Luz!

The dolphin watching in Luz departs from the beach so you do not need to drive to the Marina of Lagos to meet these beautiful creatures.  The rich coastal waters of the Algarve are home to several species of dolphins and it’s always a true adventure. We were lucky with the weather and sea conditions. Chances of finding dolphins were extremely high.

As the observation of dolphins in the wild is not predictable, it is possible not to find them on one of the trips. However, this operator has a special policy that if this occurs, you can always board again for free on another trip. In fact, the success rate is so high that they can do this.

Ready to go dolphin watching in Luz!

Ready to go dolphin watching in Luz!

We met Paulo on the beach a bit before departure. The dolphin watching in Luz was fully booked so we were lucky we could go along (that’s why we always recommend booking ahead). From Luz, we use specifically designed boats for this type of trip: fast, secure and very comfortable. The boat is powered with four-stroke outboard engines and is ultra-silent and crew manning for 12 passengers. In fact, the boat was so comfortable such that Femke, who often gets seasick, felt just fine during the tour!

The dolphins came really close!

The dolphins came really close!

To get to the boat, we needed to get into a small rubber boat on the beach and then step over to the “dolphin-boat”. No worries, this is very easy. Even two 4-5-year-old kids did it easily. On board, life vests are mandatory. It’s recommended to keep your belongings in the beach hut, where the crew can store them in special boxes. On board, all you need is a camera (on your own responsibility) and a wind jacket is recommended too (and plenty of sunscreen, of course!). In fact, sometimes it can get quite chilly deeper in the sea.

dolphin watching from luz beachhut

The boat is very safe and comfortable

Once Paulo has given us a small briefing of what to expect, we were ready to go. The crew already had a GPS point of where the dolphins were (the tour operators communicate with each other to let know where the dolphins are). We were going to cruise about 10 miles Southwest. In fact, after about 30 exciting and speedy minutes, we found a huuuge group of dolphins.

The species we found were common dolphins. How many? Uncountable! The animals were super excited. They were jumping around as there was a lot of fish. There were dolphins of all ages, some more mature ones with babies and some 1-2-year-old playful youngsters. Paulo explained that, besides the fish, what explained the all the excitement of the dolphins was the mating season. Male and female dolphins were jumping around, next to each other. It was beautiful!  Discovering the magical world of dolphins in their natural habitat is a truly unique experience.

Pilot whales are some of the species we encounter in Portugal

Our partner for dolphin watching in Ferragudo gathered some interesting data about the sightings recently. Dolphin watching in Ferragudo, near Portimão, the South of Portugal, is a huge adventure! Since we’re dealing with wild animals who are not being fed, it is always a big excitement looking for some fins in the water to spot the dolphins! Together with experienced crews, you will be looking out on the blue water waiting to see some movement. We never know what species we’ll find in the immense Atlantic!

Even though August and September are the months where we see the biggest number of cetaceans during the dolphin watching in Portimão and other destinations in the Algarve, in June of 2017 we were lucky enough to see three very special speciesDuring the tours in June last year, we saw 5 Orcas and 2 fin whales!
