The highlight of Benagil is its famous sea cave, accessible by sea. You can also relax on Praia de Benagil, or explore nearby hiking trails along the cliffs. Nearby fishertown Carvoeiro offers cute streets, shops, and restaurants for a day trip.

It’s easiest to visit the Benagil area by car, especially for visiting nearby beaches and towns along the Algarve coast. However, if you’re staying in another seatown, like Portimão or Lagos, there are direct boat tours departing from there.
Can you walk to Benagil Cave?
No — Benagil Cave has no land entrance and is not accessible on foot or by climbing down the cliffs (it’s also illegal and dangerous to try). The cave can only be reached by boat, kayak, or paddleboard. Read our full walking-access guide →
How to get to Benagil Cave
Benagil is on the central Algarve coast, closest to Lagoa and Carvoeiro. We recommend reaching it via a nearby town rather than driving directly to the cave because parking at Benagil beach is very limited.
From Lagos

The best beaches in Benagil
Right next to the famous sea cave, you’ll find a cute beach, Praia de Benagil. This beach is rather small and can get packed, especially during high season. You can also explore lesser known beaches in the area like Praia da Corredoura, accessible only from the sea (kayak or SUP).

Where and what to eat
When in the Algarve, we recommend choosing local dishes like fresh seafood and grilled fish. We can recommend “O Algar”, for example, close to Benagil Beach itself. For Nepalese & Indian Cuisine, Gurkha Kitchen, in Carvoeiro is a must.
Where to stay
Being a small village, Benagil itself has only a few guesthouses and apartments. Nearby Carvoeiro offers beachfront resorts and aparthotels. Be aware that August gets very busy here. You can also book something in the rural Algarve for a more quiet experience.

There are plenty of family-friendly options to visit the Benagil Caves. The most obvious option are the shorter boat tours. Life jackets are provided on all tours, and most operators welcome children from age 2+. For adventure seekers, kayaking can be fun, but we recommend a minimum age of 4 or 5 years old.

This may sound frustrating as you may have seen pictures with people inside the cave, but this is no longer permitted. However, some tours allow for a swim in the sea, at another beautiful location 😉
Depends on the vessel. The small cave-boats are more agile and can get deeper into the caves while the catamarans need to stay a bit further away from the cave. But all Benagil tours allow a great views of the cave. To experience the caves closest, kayak or SUP tours are the best.
