Are you ready for a Boat Tour to Capelas in São Miguel?
We will be departing from the fishing village of Rabo de Peixe and cruise towards the village of Capelas. During our boat tour, we will be able to witness the fascinating geological formations of the coast, such as the Buraco de São Pedro and the Monte das Capelas geosite, which is a tuff cone formed by an underwater eruption. We will also see arches and caves along the coast.
Capelas was where the whaling industry flourished on São Miguel Island. It is said that whaling began in the mid-1880s at a place called "Calhau Miúdo," where whales were processed into oil - a valuable source of livelihood for many families. We will take a break in the bay of Portinho das Capelas and enjoy the surrounding scenery of this historic village. Those who are feeling adventurous can bathe in these waters when the sea conditions are favorable.
On the return journey, we will pass by the beach of Ribeira Grande, with the island in the background. The meeting point is at the Port/Marina dos Pescadores de Rabo de Peixe, which is located in an area where fishing is mainly done with line and hook, in a more traditional way.
To join this activity, please arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before the start of the activity. Minimum equipment required includes comfortable shoes with rubber soles, hat, water, and sunscreen. Recommended equipment includes a windproof jacket and a waterproof bag to store your cell phone and/or camera.
