Language and Currency in Corfu

The currency used in Corfu and Greece, in general, is the Euro. So if you come from anywhere else in the EU, you don’t have to worry about exchanging money. ATMs can be found everywhere around the island, and you can also easily exchange foreign money. The official language in Corfu is Greek. Locals speak good English though, so no problem getting around only with English! 

Getting around in Corfu

The cheapest and easiest way of getting around in Corfu between the main points is definitely by bus. You can travel between the airport, cruise ship terminal and Corfu town with the blue bus line easily and for 5€ for a day pass. If you are staying a bit outside from these three main points, you can use the green bus line that travels between the smaller resorts spread out through the island. The green bus line in Corfu is also very inexpensive, about 5-7€ maximum, depending on where you’re going.

For those looking to explore also hidden corners of Corfu, renting a car or scooter is a good option. Renting a car in Corfu is rather easy and you have many different options. Most of the big car rental companies can be found at the airport. But you can also find local companies in the resorts and smaller towns. Renting a car in Corfu is great because you can also visit more hidden beaches and corners of the island. If you rent a scooter in Corfu, be aware that the roads can be quite curvy, so it is good to have some experience in riding scooters. 

For smaller distances, you can also get a taxi in Corfu. Taxi rates are quite cheap compared to other European countries. However, be aware that many times taxi drivers do not use meters. The best thing to do is to agree on the price before. It is also a good idea to bring the address on a paper or the phone, so there is no confusion!

Best things to do during your holidays in Corfu

Corfu is a great destination for beach holidays. The Ionian Sea invites everyone to just spend a fun time in the crystal clear waters. But did you know there are also many other things to do in Corfu besides beaching it up? Palaiokastritsa, for example, is one of the mythological places in Corfu you should definitely visit. It is a village located on the north-west coast of Corfu and said to be the place for Odysseus disembarked for his great journey. After visiting this historical place, you can also enjoy a coffee at the beach of Palaiokastritsa

Another thing to do in Corfu is visiting the palace of Achilleion. This palace was once built for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Today it is a famous tourist attraction, also because of the beautiful view you have from there over the entire island. Achilleion Palace is located about 10km from the city of Corfu. If you are in the city of Corfu, you should also visit the Old Fortress of Corfu. This fortress was built in the 15th century and was of great importance on the island of Corfu. Its remains are very impressive still today, so make sure to pay it a visit during your city stroll.

The best boat tours in Corfu

Corfu is a real paradise for boat tours because there are so many marvellous places just around the island that you can visit. Did you know for example that you can do a boat tour from Corfu to Albania?

The two most famous islands just outside of Corfu are Paxos and Antipaxos. Of course there are many options to visit these places by boat. You can also do a boat tour to visit the incredible blue caves of the Blue Lagoon and many other beautiful places around Corfu, like the town of Parga and Sivota.

What and where to eat in Corfu

Just like the rest of Greece, Corfu is strongly connected with wine, olive oil and bread in their local cuisine. But the island Corfu also has some special local dishes that you will only find on Corfu itself and that of course you just have to try during your stay in Corfu. Besides the typical greek ingredients, there is also a lot of delicious fresh seafood to taste around Corfu. Sea Bream, or Lavraki, is a very popular dish and given that Corfu is an island, you can get some really nice Sea Bream where you can simply taste the freshness!

If you prefer meat, you should try Nouboulo, which is pork meat stuffed in intestine and grilled together with some local spices like laurel and oregano. It’s smoked taste is very popular amongst prosciutto lovers and worth a try.  There are many many more local dishes though, and the best is to just go to the local tabernas and try them all out during your holidays. One place that is highly recommended just outside of Corfu town is the restaurant Ambelonas. Enjoy a local meal with an incredible view!

Enjoy the beautiful beaches around Corfu

The sandy beaches all around the coast of Corfu are simply breathtakingly beautiful. No wonder they have been attracting millions of tourists over the past decades. The warm, crystal-clear water of the Ionian Sea with the green landscapes in the background and the white sand are more than inviting for an unforgettable beach holiday.

There are many beautiful beaches around Corfu to discover, so make sure you visit at least a couple of them to get an impression from the different sides Corfu has to offer. There are some beaches in Corfu that are a MUST-SEE! One of those beaches is Paleokastritsa, which is located about 23km further north from Corfu Town. The beaches are located just in front of the picturesque village of the same name and are famous for their authentic character and pretty landscapes all around. There are one bay and about 6 beaches just around, one cuter than the other. 

The main beach is located just outside of the village, and you have a good infrastructure to enjoy a cold drink and some fresh food during your beach day. But if you prefer walking a bit further and escape the crowds, just visit one of the other small beaches surrounded by olive trees and magic forests.

Another beach in Corfu you should not miss out on is the Sidari Canal d’Amour, in the northwest of the island. The “Channel of Love” is an impressive rock formation, that forms an idyllic canal. The yellow cliffs and green landscapes on top of it are simply marvellous and the perfect spot to just enjoy nature and go for a refreshing swim in the turquoise waters. There are many more amazing beaches around Corfu, like Agios Georgios, Glyfada or Nissaki. Make sure you visit at least some of them to grasp the full beauty of this unique island!
