In our opinion, if you\u2019ve only got a few days to spend in Lisbon, don\u2019t spend your time in Museums, except if you\u2019re into to some particular topic, but spend your time on the streets. Lisbon\u2019s street are a museum itself. Read further and let us convince you to visit Lisbon this Fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisbon has got a strong history. By the fifteenth century, Lisbon was the capital of the Portuguese expansion. This era is also known by the Discoveries. The Portuguese had exceptional navigational expertise at the time and had set up trading routes round half the world.<\/p>\n\n\n

In 1498, the Portuguese Vasco da Gama sailed from Bel\u00e9m, Lisbon, to discover the sea route to India. Sixty years later, Lisbon controlled ports from Brazil to Macau, becoming one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. With such an abundance of richness, Lisbon was able to fund extravagant buildings such as the Torre de Bel\u00e9m (Bel\u00e9m Tower) and the Mosteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos in Bel\u00e9m<\/strong>. Also the emblematic palace at Terreiro do Pa\u00e7o dates back from then, even though, reconstructed after the Great Earthquake of 1755.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wealth seemed endless in Lisbon with newly discovered gold in Brazil, yet this second \u201cgolden age\u201d ended abruptly with the Great Earthquake. Marqu\u00eas de Pombal rapidly rebuilt the city. Since then, the \u201cBaixa\u201d (downtown), is grid-patterned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Earthquake, Lisbon never recovered its economic clout. Nowadays Lisbon flourishes as a great holiday destination and also among European exchange students and expats. Lisbon is very popular thanks to it affordable costs of living, great climate, awesome parties, location near to the beach and worldwide recognized universities.<\/p>\n\n\n

Alfama<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

By foot is surely the best way to explore Alfama, but be prepared for many hills and stairs. It might be a tiring walk, but it\u2019s surely worth it, as you\u2019ll find many hidden squares and breath-taking viewpoints. Eet een lokaal gebakje en een \"bica\" (expresso) in een van de plaatselijke caf\u00e9s om bij te komen en blijf tot later om te dineren in een van de vele Fadorestaurants. De route is rond, dus op een gegeven moment kom je weer terug bij het beginpunt. Het is erg leuk (als de tram niet te vol is). Wees voorzichtig met zakkenrollers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bairro Alto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bairro Alto is een van de hipste wijken van Lissabon en ligt op de tegenoverliggende heuvel van die van het kasteel, gescheiden door het Rossio-plein. In Bairro Alto vind je overdag veel kleine boetiekjes die unieke stukken supertrendy kleding, tweedehands vintagewinkels of tattooshops verkopen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je vindt hier ook gezellige koffietentjes voor de regenachtige dagen. s Avonds is Bairro Alto populair om uit eten te gaan, een lekkere pizza te eten of de nacht door te brengen in een Fado-restaurant, alles is hier mogelijk. Bijna elke dag van de week, na 23.00 uur, begint het een drukte van belang te worden in Bairro Alto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rossio is the main square of the Portuguese capital. It\u2019s surrounded by Portuguese restaurants and by one of the main theatres of Lisbon, Dona Maria II Theatre<\/a>. The beautifully paved square, with typical Portuguese \u201ccal\u00e7ada\u201d had two beautiful fountains. Rossio is the location of one of our favorite \u201ctascas\u201d (small local restaurants), \u201cA Tendinha<\/a>\u201d. Here, you can quickly grab a delicious soup for lunch with some nice pastries and a glass of red wine. Don’t expect the best service, but you’ll find the most authentic bites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Tendinha<\/a><\/figure>Chiado<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chiado is een van de chicste buurten van de stad. Rua Garret, gelegen tussen Rossio en Bairro Alto, is erg populair om te winkelen. Hier vind je internationale modewinkels zoals H&M en Zara, maar ook lokale boetiekjes die de prachtige gebouwen bezetten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To rest between all the shopping, you must have a coffee at \u201cA Brasileira\u201d, where Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet used to get inspires. If feel like something sweet, grab one of the best croissants at \u201cBenard\u201d or an ice-cream at \u201cSantini\u201d. Chiado is nice to take a walk after dinner and enjoy the animation by some street artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio (Commerce Square in English) is located in between the city center, Rua Augusta and the Tagus River. The square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Pa\u00e7o<\/em> because, until it was destroyed by the great 1755 earthquake, it was the location of the Pa\u00e7os da Ribeira (Royal Palace). After the earthquake, the square was completely remodelled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown by Marqu\u00eas de Pombal, the Minister of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1750 to 1777.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several restaurants are nowadays located around the square. We recommend to grab a beer and a \u201cPicapau\u201d (small pieces of meat) with bread at the Beer Museum. Also, enjoy the view by the river where you can usually find some street artists playing music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio, or Terreiro do Pa\u00e7o, is where Terminal Fluvial do Terreiro do Pa\u00e7o is located, a major boat station. Here you can catch ferries to the South Bench of the Tagus River. You can join a boat tour on a traditonal boat from Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio.<\/p>\n\n\n

Avenida da Liberdade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Avenida da Liberdade (Avenue of Freedom) is the beautiful avenue that connects Restauradores (next to Rossio square) to the Marqu\u00eas de Pombal roundabout. This avenue is where all the fashion design shops are located. You can find Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna and some Portuguese designers. It\u2019s worth it to walk up on one side and down on the other for some window shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On your way you can grab a drink on one of the many kiosks or at the S\u00e3o Jorge Cinema, one of our favourite spots for coffee after dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gulbenkian Gardens and Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Het project voor de Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation en Museum<\/a> werd gelanceerd in 1969. De stichting van het museum werd opgericht volgens de laatste wil van Calouste Gulbenkian om de kunstcollectie van Gulbenkian, die tegenwoordig toebehoort aan de Stichting van Calouste Gulbenkian, te huisvesten en tentoon te stellen. De Calouste Gulbenkian Museum<\/a> is een museum in Lissabon met een prachtige collectie kunst uit de oudheid, maar ook moderne kunst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het museum zelf is een bezoek waard, maar ook de tuinen eromheen zijn spectaculair en een populaire plek voor Portugese gezinnen om te wandelen en de eendjes te voeren.<\/p>\n\n\n

Bel\u00e9m<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bel\u00e9m is een wijk in het westen van Lissabon. Het is een zeer populaire plek voor toeristen twee bezoeken, veel als gevolg van vier belangrijke attracties die het herbergt, tussen prachtige tuinen en typische gebouwen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mosteiro dos Jer\u00f3nimos<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

De Klooster Jer\u00f3nimos<\/a> is a monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome. It is one of the most noticeable examples of the Portuguese Gothic Manueline architectural trends in Lisbon. In 1983, the Monastery was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Bel\u00e9m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toren van Bel\u00e9m<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Bel\u00e9m Tower is a fortified tower which is a UNESCO World Heritage because of its important role in the Portuguese Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King Jo\u00e3o II to be part of a defense system and a ceremonial entrance to Lisbon at the mouth of the Tagus River. As such, the tower was built in the early 16th century and is another prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style along with other architectural styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Padr\u00e3o dos Descobrimentos<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Dit monument, ook wel bekend als het Monument van de Ontdekkingen, viert de Portugese Ontdekkingen (of het Tijdperk van de Ontdekkingen) in de 15e en 16e eeuw. Naast het hoofdbeeld van Hendrik de Zeevaarder staan aan weerszijden van de hellingen van het monument in totaal 33 figuren uit de geschiedenis van de ontdekkingen, zoals Vasco da Gama (ontdekker van de zeeroute naar India en Pedro \u00c1lvares Cabral (ontdekker van Brazili\u00eb). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Docas, you can fins multiple nice restaurants and bars. Locals love to have lunch at “Rui dos Pre\u00e7os” for some clams with a “Prego no P\u00e3o” – beef on a bun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Docas de Santo Amaro is the place where most touristic boat tours depart from. Joining a boat tour in Lisbon<\/a> is a must to enjoy the city from a unique point of view and to feel the Tagus River. This area is also popular for corporate events as there are boats suitable for groups in Lisbon.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n

Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The modern Lisbon parish of Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es was established in 2012. It\u2019s a leisure, commercial, and residential area since the 1998 World Exposition (EXPO \u201998). Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es is located in north-eastern Lisbon next to the Tagus estuary, one of the biggest and diverse estuaries of the European Continent and formerly used for mainly industrial purposes. Nowadays, Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es hosts one of Portugal\u2019s most modern Marinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Er zijn verschillende dingen te doen in Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es. Je kunt gaan wandelen of hardlopen langs de prachtige promenade om te genieten van het uitzicht over de Vasco da Gama-brug, de Vasco da Gama-toren, de tweelingtorens S\u00e3o Gabriel en S\u00e3o Rafael en de jachthaven. Je kunt genieten van een concert in de enorme concertzaal Atlantic Pavilion of naar een congres in FIL gaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als je van de natuur en de oceaan houdt, maar het weer laat een boottochtje of een andere oceaan-gerelateerde activiteit niet toe, dan is het Oceanarium de plek om naartoe te gaan. De Oceanarium van Lissabon <\/a>is een groot aquarium met zeedieren, vooral grote oceaanbewoners zoals haaien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es is de thuisbasis van Casino van Lissabon<\/strong> - \"Casino Lisboa<\/a>\". Het casino is een zeer modern gebouw met een Arena Lounge en drie gokbars. Zelfs als je niet van gokken houdt is het \"Cascino Lisboa\" zeker een bezoek waard om te dineren of om van een show of concert te genieten. \"Casino Lisboa\" is elke dag geopend van 15.00 tot 15.00 uur. Op vrijdag, zaterdag en feestdagen is het casino open van 16 tot 04 uur, zodat je tot iets later kunt genieten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voor de winkelfanaten biedt Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es onderdak aan een van de grootste winkelcentra van Lissabon, Vasco da Gama Shopping Mall. Het moderne gebouw heeft een enorme supermarkt, veel internationale merken en kleinere boetiekjes en een foodcourt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
