The bioluminescence phenomenon is a natural wonder that occurs when living creatures emit light, and these radiant organisms are on display year-round within the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Reserve. The bay consists of a smaller bay, formerly known as Mangrove Lagoon, which houses a sizable population of bioluminescent plankton known as dinoflagellates. These dinoflagellates emit light in response to physical contact, which is believed to be a defense mechanism that frightens away predators.

To observe these awe-inspiring creatures, we need complete darkness, so our tours are dependent on the moon cycle. Our Bioluminescent Kayak Trips are scheduled when the moon is below the horizon during the evening hours (which occurs for two weeks following the full moon) or when the moon is in its crescent phase.

During the tour, you'll explore the Bio Bay and other nearby areas in search of other bioluminescent species. Along the way, our knowledgeable guide will provide you with fascinating insights into the local ecology, history, and spiritual mysteries of Salt River.

Each kayak can accommodate up to two people and this activity has a maximum capacity of 16 participants. We offer two types of kayaks - the Ocean Kayak and the Clear Kayak. The Ocean Kayak is more comfortable, more maneuverable, and better suited for rough conditions. It's also faster, easier to get in and out of, and has a higher weight capacity. The Clear Kayak, on the other hand, is transparent and operates like a canoe. However, it has a limited weight capacity (400lbs) and is not available for the LATE NIGHT Bioluminescent Kayak Trip.
