Are you ready to learn how to surf in Madeira?

Visiting the island of Madeira and would like to learn a new sport? How about an island-surf lesson? The lessons to learn how to surf in Madeira are given on the beautiful beaches of volcanic sand, in the north-eastern part of the island. Learning how to surf in Madeira is accessible to all ages and suitable for all levels of experience.

The coaches who’ll teach you how to surf in Madeira are certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation and have extensive experience in teaching and surfing. All surf classes include a theoretical session and warming up of about 15 minutes and about 1h30m of practice.

Surfing is rather dependent on weather conditions. On Madeira Island, weather and ocean conditions vary a lot and we shall always search for the best alternative to ensure the complete enjoyment of our activities.

Surfing first started in Madeira in the 1970s, namely in the villages of Paul do Mar, Jardim do Mar and Ponta Pequena. Nowadays, Lugar de Baixo and São Vicente are also popular surf spots and the beaches off Funchal, Madeira’s capital, sometimes have fun left-handers. We’ll take you to exclusive surf areas far from the busy touristic zones to enjoy nature and good waves.  Did you know that in 2001, the World Big Wave Championships were held in Madeira?

We can pick you up and drop you off around Caniço, Funchal and Santa Cruz area. Transfers are 10€ per person (to be paid on the day).

FAQ for the surf lesson in Madeira

What should I wear for the surf lesson?
In the summer season, sometimes, just your swimsuit and lycra (provided) is enough for a surf lesson on Madeira. During the colder winter season, it might be better to wear a wetsuit (included). Most of all, don’t forget plenty of sunscreen. After the class, you might want to have a towel and some dry/warm clothes.

Can I store my belongings while surfing?
You can store your belongings in your own (rental) car or with the guides, in their van or in the school on the beach. We recommend bringing as few things as possible. 

Is this experience suitable for people who’ve never done surf before?
Yes, all surf lessons on SeaBookings are designed for beginners unless otherwise stated. The surf classes include a brief beach-class where you’ll learn how to deal with the waves, manoeuvre the board and stand-up. 

Is this tour suitable for kids?
Most surf tours are designed for adults. We can, of course, adapt the lesson for kids or do a private kid’s surf class. Please contact us before booking for your child.

Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes, for surf classes, basic swimming skills are a must. Most likely you won’t need to swim, but you never know! 

What happens if the class is cancelled? 
The surf classes are always subject to weather and sea conditions. If it’s expected that the surf lesson will be cancelled, you will be contacted prior to the scheduled class. It can happen that the classes are cancelled last minute due to unexpected changes in the conditions. If we don't manage to find a new compatible slot, you’ll always be 100% refunded.
