This Bioluminescence Clear Kayaking Cruise in Titusville takes places on the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the 6th most visited and the most bio diverse eco system in all of North America. With that being said, there is absolutely no light pollution on the refuge, except for the rockets launching at night! As there is zero light pollution, it enables us to see the bioluminescence much more vividly on no moon nights. We can also see the Milky Way galaxy over head from May - Sept, which is not easily seen elsewhere in Florida by the naked eye.
During the warm summer months the waters of Florida's Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon come alive with single-celled microorganisms called dinoflagellates. Every movement in the water produces a sold-light called bioluminescence! From the swirl of your paddle or the trail of a speeding school of mullet (which look like hundreds of blue-green underwater bottle rockets), to the ghostly glow of a slow moving manatee or sting ray, every movement is illuminated. No need to travel to Puerto Rico to see this phenomenon. It's right here in sunny Central Florida. You will be on the water for 90 minutes.
