We tried SUP in Aljezur

Holidays in Odeceixe – time for a SUP tour!

This year we decided to try the northern west coast of the Algarve region of Portugal for our summer holidays. We rented a nice rural house in Odeceixe, walking distance to the beach of Odeceixe. This house ended up being the perfect spot for some active holidays with the family. On the program we had: biking to Odeceixe Beach, running to Amoreira Beach and doing SUP in Aljezur.

The setting is ideal for a calm SUP tour with no crowds

Of course, on SeaBookings blog, we’ll tell you all about the SUP in Aljezur. We joined an afternoon tour which was something new to us as we’re more used to early morning tours. The SUP in Aljezur was a river tour, on the Praia da Amoreira, the perfect setting for a peaceful stand-up paddle tour! We’ve done SUP a few times before, in Lagos, Cascais, Madeira… And this SUP in Aljezur would be the first river-tour. We were very lucky with calm and warm weather

The tour is ideal to do some cleanup long the route!

We met the friendly guides at the car park. We were super curious about how they aim to be the SUP school with the lowest carbon footprint. The guides provide SUP tours to discover the most beautiful and remote beaches, rivers or lakes of the Algarve. Some of these unique spots are Arrifana, Amoreira, Odeceixe and Barragem da Bravura.

Regarding the gear used for the SUP tours, Antoine and Gaylord proudly explained that they use the best eco/tech stand up paddle boards from Starboard and Patagonia wetsuits. These high-quality brands try to be as much environment-aware as they can. Starboard, for example, has a mission to not only to make the best boards in the world, but also the best boards for the world. We learned they do so by using recycled material and EVA. And did you know that they have innovative “Paddle Picks”? You can attach this little accessory made by recycled fishing nets to a paddle to easily pick up floating pieces of trash while you are out for a paddle. Of course, we gave some use to these “Paddle Picks” along the tour to help keep the waterways clean!

Welcome to the calm side of the Algarve!

After this interesting and passionate introduction, we were ready to hit the water. It was the first time we were taking little Lu of five years old on a SUP tour, so we were all super excited! Lu started the SUP tour on the front of her dad’s board while we were heading river inwards. We were going with the currents so we hardly had to paddle. Of course, the guides warned us that we’d also have to paddle back, so against the current but that they could help if needed.

Doing SUP in this setting is sooooo relaxing!

The scenery of this SUP tour was stunning. I knew that Praia da Amoreira was one of the prettiest beaches in Portugal, but I had never enjoyed it from this perspective. It was a very pleasant ride. While the guides were sharing some of their SUP experiences and stories about life in Aljezur, time flew by! Lu jumped from one board to another and had a blast. Children just love being so close to the sea!

After about 45min of a paddle with the current, it was time to head back and paddle against the current. Me and Xiko like some challenge, so we did not accept the help offered by the guides and had a true full-body workout

You can do SUP your way, chilled and relaxed or make a workout!

Along the way, we still did some stops to use the Paddle Pick to take some litter and leave no trace, or better, leave the “playground” cleaner than we found it. The main littler we caught was related to fishing activities or beach-goers. Glad we could give back a bit this way!

It feels really good to enjoy nature and to help to keep it clean

The tour ended at the same place where we started. We were all exhausted but super satisfied. We still had a nice talk with this dream team while we were putting the gear back in the van. Sandy, Gaylord and Antoine are the ideal guides to take you and explore Aljezur by SUP! Besides a lovely SUP tour, you’ll learn a lot about the region and about sustainability. We’ll be back soon!

SUP Benagil

SUP vs Kayak to Benagil

How to choose: SUP or kayak to Benagil

The Benagil cave is one of the most famous sea caves in the Algarve. You can visit it by boat, SUP or kayak. If you’re with an active group of people looking to visit the Benagil cave, a kayak or SUP tour should be on top of your list. Both tours allow you to get off in the Benagil cave, while on a boat tour, you stay in the boat.

But what is the best choice for you to visit Benagil cave? Let us show you by comparing SUP vs Kayak to Benagil

SUP or kayak to Benagil

The epic Benagil cave is just one of the many caves of the region

SUP to Benagil

Joining a SUP Tour to visit Benagil is a super fun way to visit the famous caves. Have you ever tried SUP before? It’s short for Stand-Up Paddleboarding, and it’s very easy to learn. You stand or knee on one of the big SUP Boards and use a paddle to move in the water.

Even if you have never done SUP before, it’s no problem. The SUP guides will always give you a little introduction at the beach about what you need to know. After that, it’s just up to you to grab your board and start paddling.

A Tour to do SUP to Benagil is perfect because you can really access the cave. By going by SUP to Benagil, you can explore also the region just around the Benagil cave with its beautiful beaches. SUP to Benagil also allows us to get really close the Algarve coast.

During a SUP Tour to Benagil, we can even paddle through some arches and grottos! It’s a real adventure. And the best thing is that you also stay very fit while doing SUP – it’s a great exercise for core, legs and arms. Whenever it gets too hot, just jump in the water and after you can easily climb on the board again!

SUP to Benagil is a great choice for people looking for a new challenge or even all SUP-lovers out there. The SUP Tours to Benagil are only done as long as the sea conditions are nice and calm, so you don’t have to worry about the waves. With the Stand-Up paddling, you can also go to the little beach inside the Benagil cave.

You can join the Stand-Up Paddle tour to Benagil in the morning or in the afternoon. We even have a sunrise SUP Tour to Benagil, which is the perfect way to visit the caves. Early in the morning, you can admire the cave without the masses of tourists and boats.

Kayak to Benagil

Choosing a Kayak tour to Benagil is also a great way to visit the cave. Going by Kayak to Benagil is a lot of fun for the whole family. On our kayak tours to Benagil, there is always a support boat next to it. This makes it a great choice for groups where some might not want to kayak and prefer staying on the boat.

Kayaking is very easy and you don’t need any previous experience for it. You sit comfortably in the sea kayak together with one more person usually and paddle together to explore the Algarve coastline. Admire the beautiful caves around Benagil beach.

Each kayak takes 2 people

Each kayak takes 2 people

On our boat and kayak tour to Benagil, the biggest part of the tour is done by boat. Once you get closer to Benagil, you can switch over to the kayak and get really close to the caves and grottos.

Let the guide show you secret passages in the rock formations and take you to hidden caves and grottos. With the kayak, you can also access the beach inside the Benagil cave! That’s why it’s a great choice to visit the famous Benagil cave by kayak! And of course, you also stay fit and get a nice tan during the kayak to Benagil.

Benagil boat tour in Algarve

The Benagil Cathedral is just one of the many impressive caves of the area

SUP vs Kayak to Benagil

Alright, as you can see, both a SUP or Kayak Tours to Benagil have a lot of great arguments for it. But what should you choose? A tour to do SUP or Kayak to Benagil

It really depends on the type of person you are and the group of people you are looking to do the tour with! If you are looking to visit Benagil cave with a group or family, that is generally quite active and love sporty adventures, we can highly recommend choosing the SUP to Benagil cave.

However, if somebody on your group doesn’t want to do something too tiring or even if you are travelling with little kids, then kayak to Benagil is the perfect choice for you. There you always have the option to get back to the boat or just stay on board while the ones who want go out exploring the coastline!

But in the end, both SUP and Kayak to Benagil promise to be a lot of fun and a great experience during your holidays in the Algarve! If you need more help making up your mind, just send us an e-mail to [email protected]!

SUP Tour in Lisbon

SUP Tour in Lisbon – Discovering Cascais

Lianne was happy to tell us about her experience on the boat tour to see the dolphins in Setúbal. After that, we send her immediately to Cascais to experience a SUP Tour in Lisbon!

IMG_20160821_130632

Proudly standing on my board!

I heard a lot of stories about stand-up paddle and I couldn’t wait to experience this myself! I asked some information at SeaBookings about a SUP tour in Lisbon. Therefore SeaBookings immediately arranged a SUP class in Cascais (which is very close to Lisbon). Besides the SUP tour, it was also worth it to visit Cascais!

The train from Lisbon to Cascais

To avoid long waiting lines it’s best to skip these lines and buy your ticket in advance (this is possible at every metro station). You only have to charge your public transport card with credit (“zapping”) instead of rides. With this money you can travel by train and bus. Every 20 minutes there is a traindeparting from the station Cais do Sodré to Cascais. Cascais is a very nice place to be if you want to escape the busy life from the city (Lisbon). Here you find beautiful beaches where you can sunbathe, swim and of course also stand up paddle! So, because SeaBookings told me so, I put money on my travel card so I could take the train immediately. As you can see on the photo below, the waiting lines are longggg…

If I had to wait in the line I would probably be too late for my first SUP class!

IMG_20160821_142715

People trying to buy a train ticket to one of the beaches along the “Linha”

A one-way ticket only cost me 2€. And if you are travelling by train I can recommend you to sit on the left side of the train to enjoy the stunning ocean view!. And because SeaBookings already gave me these recommendations, I could enjoy everything before I even had arrived!

The SUP tour in Lisbon, or more precisely, Cascais

From the train station in Cascais it is not difficult to find the SUP school. After a walk for about 5 minutes, there was a warm welcome along the beach of “Duquesa”. I just arrived from Holland to Portugal so it was necessary to have some good sunscreen protection on the water! I didn’t want to become a lobster!

IMG_20160821_115948

Praia da Duquesa

And there we went, with two other people we each receive a paddle and there was a very good briefing by Nuno. He told us the do’s and don’ts on a paddle board! It’s not difficult because the briefing only took about 10 minutes time. That is the benefit of stand up paddle. It is not difficult to learn. There was even a boy of 10 years old joining our group!

IMG_20160821_121056

Nuno giving us a beach lesson

At the beginning, you can choose you to go on your board with your knees (if you thinks it is scary to stand immediately). This way you definitely don’t have to be scared to fall because it is easy to keep your balance. Well, but eventually you have to stand right? The trick is not to look down! Just keep on looking forward and it’s a piece of cake! Only my legs were a bit afraid so they were trembling (but let’s forget that part  because I looked like Bambi for just a few seconds). But luckily I wasn’t alone! This is so normal and because of that, we did some exercises to look like a pro eventually.
IMG_20160821_122012With Linda from hungary, ready for our first SUP experience!

And all of the sudden someone said: “Don’t forget to enjoy the view!”  At that moment I looked around me and I thought: WOW! It is as if you are walking on the water and floating between the boats. Really, an experience to never forget!

It is not difficult and if you ask me, a good way to enjoy the sea because you can see it from the other side instead of the beach. The next time I’m going to do a SUP tour I will go for more hours. This time it was only one hour but it felt like 5 minutes! It is also possible to do a tour for about 2 or 3 hours. That would be perfect! If you want to do more than only stand up paddle then try to combine this with some yoga!

Thanks to SeaBookings and the SUP school this trip was amazing and I will never forget it! Many thanks for this! Oh and also, many thanks to SeaBookings for the great tips you gave me. That way my first SUP experience was more than perfect! I am looking forward to the next SUP tour in Lisbon or Cascais!

This was the experience of Lianne who really liked the SUP tour in Lisbon! Would you like to join a SUP tour in Lisbon? Book now!

Do you also have a nice SeaBookings experience to share? Let us know!

Obrigada, Lianne, for another great review and SEA ya soon!

SUP em Sesimbra SUP tour in Sesimbra

We went on a SUP Tour in Sesimbra!

This is an experience from João, friend of the SeaBookings Team, who went out to try our new SUP Tour in Sesimbra:

O nosso grupinho for mais pequeno mas existe a possibilidade de marcar para grupos maiores

The group was small but there is the possibility to do this tour with big groups

Saturday, eight in the morning. The alarm goes off, and what is the first reaction!? Snooze, snooze, snooze! Until we suddenly jump out of bed, into the shower, to the kitchen for a quick breakfast and then off we go to Sesimbra, where we are scheduled for our very first SUP Tour in Sesimbra!

At the scheduled time we arrived at the door of Clube Naval in Sesimbra. Here we met the rest of the group, some of who were also doing Kayaking on this Kayak and SUP Tour in Sesimbra. The plan seemed perfect: take a boat to the beach Ribeira do Cavalo, one of the most beautiful beaches of Portugal. There we would jump on our board to explore the beautiful caves and rock formations of the Arrábida region. However, as with many perfect plans, it didn’t work out just quite as perfect – the sea wasn’t following the plan! The sea was a little rough, which made it unsafe to paddle too close to the rocks.

Supostamente o passeio começa na Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo

The tour should start at Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo

After the boat tour, we arrived at the amazing beach of Ribeira do Cavalo. The view from the boat was just stunningly beautiful. The professional crew then informed us, that we would start the tour directly from the boat since the current around the shore was too strong.

But first, a short briefing – How to paddle for Dummies! After the short but professional briefing, we went off to the water for a first try. I somehow thought it would be super easy to stand on one of those big boards and paddle. After all, the board is the size of an aircraft carrier, so what’s the big deal? But not so fast! So I first just kneed down on the board to start paddling, and thought to myself: “You were so wrong, let’s see if you even gonna be able to stand up”!

De SUP pode-se explorar os recantos da costa da Arrábida

By SUP you can explore the coastline real closely Arrábida

The SUP Tour in Sesimbra turned out just beautiful. The coast around this part of the Serra Arrábida is absolutely fascinating with all the little caves and grottos. We saw so many stunning hidden beaches around the coast! Unfortunately, on that day we weren’t able to paddle close to the impressive scenery, how they usually do it on the SUP Tour in Sesimbra (if there are no waves)!

When the moment arrived that I tried the SU part of SUP, it just turned into a lot of fun (for everybody I think)! Splash after splash, but after every failed try we worked out a little more how this whole SUP thing works! After a while, we managed to stand up and paddle the rest of the tour. After, I felt like I did a leg and abs training on a balance trainer for a few hours! It really is a great workout for the whole body, and you train coordination as well as balance! It’s better than any physiotherapy session if you ask me!

Venham desfrutar da natureza

Join us to enjoy nature closely

Just to calm you down, the friendly staff assured us that usually, the sea is a lot calmer and more gentle, which makes it a lot easier to actually stand up and paddle around! So for us, the next SUP Tour will be super easy, as we learned it the rough way!

We recommend this SUP Tour in Sesimbra for everybody! It’s such a great sensation to stand on the big paddle boards, paddling along the fascinating coast of Sesimbra. Thank you SeaBookings for making this possible! We guarantee that everybody will love this experience, even if you never tried SUP before (like us) ;). Try it out and let us know how you liked it!

We went to try out SUP and SUP Yoga in Cascais

SUP Yoga in Cascais

SUP Yoga in Cascais

Last week I joined a group of friends and woke up early to head to Cascais. It was worth waking up early as the sun and quiet ocean were inviting us for a relaxing stand-up paddle boarding session with a tour and SUP yoga in Cascais.

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, is a fast growing sport. There are several reasons why SUP is gaining more and more fans. One of the main reasons is that SUP is very easy to learn. In fact, after a quick beach class of about 15 minutes, you’re ready to get into the water. In addition, SUP is suitable for all ages and does not require any previous experience. All SUP requires is love for the ocean and willing to workout a bit!

After hearing all these nice stories about SUP, we decided to try it out ourselves. Nick, from the SUP school in Cascais, welcomed us as soon as we got to the stunning beach of Cascais. Praia da Duquesa is the beach where the SUP school is located. It’s a very idyllic beach as it’s very cozy, surrounded by the characteristic noble buildings. The waters around Cascais are light blue and the temperature does not show it’s the Atlantic.

Paddle Yoga in Cascais

After choosing the right life jacket, board and paddle according to our sizes, we went to the the beach to practice in the sand. Lia was the girl who was in charge of our SUP session. She started to explain how we should get on the boards, how to lie on them, how to get up to your knees and stand up. It’s also important to understand how to use the paddle correctly. After showing us some tips and sticks, we were ready to get into the water.

The water felt nice, rather fresh, but not as freezing as you’d expect the Atlantic to be. No wetsuit was needed, only a swimsuit and a life vest. As you reach a depth to your knees, you can easily get on your board, on your knees and start rowing. There was no wind at all and the water was crystal clear. We could even see some fishes and rocks.

SUP Tour in Cascais

The first part of the SUP session consisted on a tour. We went for a nice tour along some of the beaches of Cascais and the marina. I’m not sure how long the tour took, maybe half an hour, but as I was enjoying so much, I lost track of time. During the SUP tour in Cascais, you could choose if you wanted to stay seated on your knees or stand up. I prefer to stand up as it gives a nice view over the coastline. SUP in Cascais is wonderful to get to know the coastline of Cascais but also to workout. In fact, while sitting on your knees or standing on your board, you’re working out your whole body, from your toes to hands!

It was nice to paddle through the boats and say “hi” to the people who were on them. The view of the group of girls standing on their boards while paddling over the water was also amazing. We did a kind of round and got back to near the SUP school.

SUP Yoga in Cascais

When we all had reached the meeting point in front of Praia da Duquesa, Lia tied all our leashes (leash is the rope that attached your foot to the board) to a buoy. The buoy was there, anchored, such that we could attach our boards to it to stay on the same place for the SUP yoga in Cascais.

Lia had prepared a very nice yoga sequence for us. Some postures were thought to be easier and low-gravity to be able to perform them on the SUP board. Other postures were a bit more challenging and only some of us managed to do them.

Personally, I must admit that the SUP yoga in Cascais was easier than I thought. Of course I did not manage to do some of the more challenging postures, but others I did fine. I practice yoga frequently so I was really looking forward to join yoga, that I love, to another passion: the ocean. SUP yoga in Cascais totally exceeded my expectations. Doing yoga outside and feeling the sun on your skin is amazing. Now, imagine this plus feeling the ocean, the ocean’s water and movement. It’s amazing. When we finished the SUP Yoga, I just said: can we do this everyday, please?

I recommend the SUP in Cascais for everybody who likes the sea. It’s a great sport to do with a group of friends. Nick and his team will welcome you and give you a great experience. I’ll be back soon, that’s for sure!

All you need to do SUP in Cascais is to bring is a swimsuit (for the girls, you might want to bring some shorts, but we didn’t), sunscreen, a towel and some water and a snack. After the SUP session, you can grab a beer at the bar next to the SUP school. Here, a beer only costs 1,10€. To get to Cascais, you can drive from Lisbon, about 30 minutes over the A5 motorway. You can also go by train, a very nice route along the coastline, from Cais do Sodre. The train takes about 40 minutes and costs about 2€.

Let us know if you’d like to try some SUP in Cascais, a tour or a yoga session. If you’ve got any suggestions or questions, let us know too.
