It is possible to do this is a day tour. However, if you can spare one night, it is much more relaxed if you take your time and make it a two-day trip. But that’s just a recommendation. 🙂

Here are the options for how to get from Lisbon to Benagil, or better, to some of the locations out trips to Benagil depart from:

You can go from Lisbon to Benagil by bus

You can go from Lisbon to Benagil by bus

  1. Bus from Lisbon to Benagil

This is the cheapest and probably the easiest option to get from Lisbon to Benagil. There are numerous bus companies to choose from and they all offer more or less the same service at the same prices.

If you go on renex.pt, you can choose Lisbon Sete Rios or Lisbon Oriente as your starting point. The easiest is to go to Lagoa (careful, LagoA not LagoS). The direct bus drive takes a bit over 3 hours and costs around 20€. There is a bathroom on board and the busses have air conditioning and are very comfortable.

From Lagoa, you can grab a taxi for about 10€ to Praia do Carvoeiro, Ferragudo or Praia de Benagil. There you can get on one of the boat tours, kayak tours or SUP Tours to Benagil. We have a lot to choose from! We also have departures from Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura. Just check what’s easiest for you or what town appeals most to you.

By train the ride is more comfortable

By train the ride is more comfortable

  1. Train from Lisbon to Benagil

The second option to get from Lisbon to Benagil is by train. On cp.pt you have a few more starting points in Lisbon to choose from, so it is more likely that you have one close to your hotel or accommodation. You can go to Estombar-Lagoa by train too. However, you have to change trains in Tunes.

The train takes only around 3,5 hours and the price is only a few euros higher than if you choose to go by bus. Once you get to the train station in Lagoa, you can get a taxi to Praia do Carvoeiro or Praia do Benagil. From here a taxi will cost you around 10-15€.

The train is also a great option to consider when you plan on how to get from Lisbon to Benagil. It’s easy, comfortable and you get to see some beautiful landscapes along the way.

By rental car you're more independent

By rental car you’re more independent

  1. Rental Car from Lisbon to Benagil

If you are travelling with more people or just want to be more independent, renting a car for a day might be a good option for you to get from Lisbon to Benagil. In Lisbon, there are numerous car rental companies to choose from.

During high season, prices per day for a rental car start at around 50-55€. In low season, you can rent cars a lot cheaper. Just be aware that a lot of car rental companies ask for a deposit of 1.000€ on your credit card.

If you choose to rent a car to get from Lisbon to Benagil, you have two options: You take the long route on the national road which will take you about 5 hours. Or you can go on the freeway, where you have to pay tolls but you only take about 2,5-3 hours. To get from Lisbon to Benagil and back, you will be charged around 50€ for tolls.

For the tolls on the freeway, you can either get a transponder in your rental car for a small extra fee. That’s the easiest way because you don’t have to worry about anything and just pay the toll on the rental car company. If you don’t get a transponder, you can pay the tolls 2 days after driving on the freeway in a payshop. For this, you just need to have your license plate and then you pay with your bank card in the payshop or at a post office.

Another alternative are the private transfers. A private driver will pick you up where and when you want and take you to your destination in Portugal. We recommend RobustPerfection, with a “perfect” transfer service all around Portugal.

stand-up paddle in Benagil

We tried stand-up paddle in Benagil!

By Lianne, customer support and content creation at SeaBookings.

Benagil, Benagil, Benagil.. What is so special about the Benagil cave in the Algarve, in the south of Portugal? I did a tour with stand-up paddle in Benagil to discover.

This summer I’ve heard a lot of stories about this cave and it seems to be one of the most popular caves in Portugal at the moment. I was curious about what made this cave so special and worth a visit. On photos you see a large opening in the centre of the cave allowing a spotlight of sun to enter the cave. And around the Benagil cave you can find many more caves.

We did stand-up paddle in Benagil!

I knew from SeaBookings that new local restrictions do not allow you to disembark from the boat tours into the Benagil cave. You can take impressive pictures from the boat but for safety reasons it is not permitted to swim from the boat into the Benagil cave. If I really wanted to step on the sand of the cave I should do either stand-up paddle in Benagil or a kayak tour. And so to get the maximum experience, I opted for SUP in Benagil. Both tours are very popular so SeaBookings recommend booking in advance if you really want to experience the ecological way of navigating through the caves.

We had to get up early. The stand-up paddle in Benagil starts at 9am. Why so early? Well, as I already said, the Benagil cave is popular, one of the main attractions of the Algarve. It is incredible how many people want to see the Benagil cave. At 9am you are the first one on the beach giving you the unique chance to enjoy the quiet surroundings and nature at its best. You see the caves before everyone else arrives and disturbs the peace.

You can sit or stand on your board

The SUP in Benagil takes about 3 hours, which sounds long but I can assure you time flies when you are having fun. It is an up close and personal experience of all the caves and not only Benagil, because the other (8!) caves are just as magical as the Benagil cave. For me, and for the rest of the group (total of 6 participants), this SUP in Benagil experience was very special, exploring the caves at your own pace.

But let’s start at the beginning. 9am is still very early and especially after a very cool traditional party at the beach in Lagos (Banho 29). But we made it on time and Bruno, the guide, was already waiting for us to get ready for the tour. Along with 4 other people we were preparing to discover the ocean and the caves. “Put loads of sunscreen, you will need it” said Bruno. Because of the reflection of the water it is easy to get burned. So we did. We then took our boards towards the beach where it was still nice and quiet. Bruno explained the do’s and don’ts regarding safety, how to navigate and which caves we were going to visit.

Bruno is such a cool guide!

Bruno is such a cool guide!

We had 3 hours so plenty of time to see everything and also to get to know all the secrets about the caves, all very well explained by Bruno. I am not going to tell you any of his secrets because you will need to do this amazing SUP in Benagil and discover it by yourselves. My first stand-up paddle experience was last year when I was in Portugal (see my blog SUP in Cascais). For the rest of the group it was their first time but that was no problem. Because we did the SUP in Benagil early in the morning., we had time to practise without any waves caused by passing boats. In the beginning, these waves were a bit scary but after a few minutes you feel more confident and later it was actually cool to try and keep on standing on your board when a boat passes by. Also therefore I would highly recommend going early in the morning.

If you go with Bruno you will have the full experience. He shows you very beautiful prehistoric well-preserved fossils and shells. If you go on your own you will never know this because you don’t know exactly where to look.

Different from other boat tours, during this stand-up paddle in Benagil you are more active, which makes it very special and unique. Before going on this tour I thought to myself “hmm I won’t be able to take pictures because there is a chance I fall into the water.” But no worries, Bruno thought about all this and he will take enough pictures during the trip with his gopro camera. If you really want, he will take your cell phone with him (as long as it’s sealed in a bag). That is nice because you can enjoy the tour even more without worrying about taking photos. Afterwards he will send you the pictures so you will have a nice memory.

The Benagil cave is truly amazing!

The Benagil cave is truly amazing!

After the tour we had a beer on the beach of Benagil with Bruno to look back at this amazing experience stand-up paddle in Benagil. He shared some more fun facts about the cave, the region and his experience as a guide with us.

The last important thing I noticed is that I saw people swimming to the Benagil cave. This is not recommended due to strong currents and tides. What makes it even more dangerous are the many boats coming in and out the Benagil cave. You can imagine what can happen if the people on the boat do not see you swimming. Accidents happen frequently, and to avoid them I would recommend a boat tour or even better, trying the more ecological way and do the stand-up paddle tour to the Benagil cave. On a boat or SUP tour, you’ll be able to go safely enjoy the Benagil cave closely. Besides that, there is a lot to secrets to see in the Benagil cave. On your own you will never know this. Thanks Bruno and thanks  SeaBookings!

The fact that the kayaks for the kayak tour in Benagil are tandem makes it suitable for families. Children can go with their parents. For example, mom can go with one of the kids and dad with the other. As long as the kids can swim, they are welcome! Don’t’ you want the kayak but your whole family or group of friends does? No worries, come along on the support boat and enjoy the sun, view and take some pictures.

The kayak tour in Benagil will be continuously accompanied by the boat. If you feel tired or something goes wrong, the boat is there to support immediately. Of course, this is usually not necessary, it’s just a matter of precaution. To go kayaking in Benagil, you do not need to be super fit. Obviously, it’s a physical exercise, but not very intense and it does not require any previous experience.

About the tour itself, kayaking in Benagil is amazing! You’ll have the change to stop on four different beaches for a little rest and to explore the beauty of the rock formations. In total, you’ll be able to get into about ten different caves. Kayaking in Benagil, as said, starts at Praia de Benagil and you’ll be kayaking up to Praia da Marinha. The huge cave of Benagil is the highlight of this kayak tour in Benagil. This is one of the largest marine caves of Europe and the waters around it are several shades of blue. Just beautiful!

The sights along the kayak tour in Benagil are stunning. We went into a lot of different grottos. As it was a very warm day, we even went for a swim. As the kayaks are rather unstable and can get totally wet, it’s not recommended to take your phone or camera. You can store your luggage and phone at the tour operator. If you have got a water-resistant GoPro, please bring it! You’ll make impressive pictures and videos for sure!

Now it’s your turn!

All you need to bring to go kayaking in Benagil is a swimming suit, towel, hat and a lot of sunscreens! As this activity is very depended on the tides and waves, we recommend you to book a few days ahead and stay in contact to be informed about the conditions of the ocean. Of course, cancellations are not part of the plan but due to the nature of this activity, they may happen! Controlling the weather and ocean conditions is still something that is out of our reach.
