Planning the Best Holidays in the Algarve

Planning the Best Holidays in the Algarve

Are you coming on holidays in Portugal? The Algarve, is a perfect destination to relax, do some sightseeing, do some great activities and of course for the younger generation, a fantastic nightlife in bars or on a boat party.

Your holiday planning for the Algarve depends on the type of person you are. Who are you?

Party Animals

The younger generation, from 15 to 25 years old, should definitely enjoy the best of Albufeira.
In Albufeira, you have many fun things to do, as the Caves & Dolphin watching tour (my favorite tour), Captain Hook Cruise (an inexpensive way and fun to enjoy the coastline) or a wild boat party from Albufeira Marina!

Albufeira is perfect place to party until you drop down.  At day time, enjoy the beautiful white and sunny beaches with amazing cliffs and rock formations to recovery energy to party over and over again.

Young Adventurers

For young couples, in our opinion, as you might not want the wild nightlife, but rater prefer to have a romantic holiday in the Algarve. You should choose a city as Lagos or Carvoeiro, little cities, with an amazing history and nice restaurants.

Lagos is the city known because of the world discoveries.  In this city, you will have the possibility to see the most amazing beaches of Europe (Praia D. Ana and Ponta da Piedade).
The most popular tour in Lagos is definitely the grotto tour. On this tour from Lagos, you will enter in sea grottoes and enjoy the view over the impressive coastline.

Families

If you are coming on holidays with your family, we would recommend, first of all, to find a place that allows children to play and make some noise without stress. At the end, they are also on holidays. Taking this into consideration, with children of any age, we would suggest you to stay at a countryside apartment with a swimming pool.

We highly recommend Monte Rosa Apartments in Lagos, as you have comfortable apartments with a swimming pool for affordable prices.

The things we would recommend you to do on your family holiday in Lagos, is definitely, the dolphin watching tour.  This boat tour from Lagos is unforgettable because everyone will be impressed by this amazing wildlife.

Go to some waterparks, as Slide & Splash, or discover some beaches at the west coast.

Nature Lovers

For the most relaxing holidays in the Algarve, you should go to Sagres, a very calm place to discover the best of nature. From Sagres, you have several walking or cycling tours along the coast. Or if you just want to sit down and enjoy the views, get on a Jeep Safari.

Near Sagres, you have amazing restaurants to enjoy the freshest fish ever while looking over impressive views over the beaches and cliffs.

The friendly and calm population, makes this a non-touristic but a desired place to go. Go on a boat trip from Sagres to see the most amazing high cliffs and wild dolphins.

How to get around in the Algarve

This is another post of our series: How to get from A to B in Portugal! Since the biggest part of tourism in Portugal happens in the Algarve, we thought it would be helpful to make a blog post about how to get around in the Algarve! This will be a big help for you if you’re planning your holiday or even if you’re already in the Algarve!

Most of you probably fly into the cute little airport of Faro. But even though Faro is a great destination with a lot of things to see and some great boat tours, the majority of people arriving at Faro keep travelling to one of the more popular Algarve towns. To know how to get there, we will tell you how to get around in the Algarve!

If you’re just looking to get around in the Algarve to get from Faro to your hotel or accommodation, the easiest and most comfortable way is with a transfer. In the Algarve, there are some transfer companies like Yellowfish or Greenbus. You just need to book your transfer at least 24h in advance. This way, once you land, you just head straight to the stand of the company and off you go! During summer, waiting times can be longer though. However, this is a very easy way of getting from Faro to your accommodation!

The bus is a cheap option to travel around the Algarve

The bus is a cheap option to travel around the Algarve

Other ways to get from the airport in Faro to the most popular destinations in the Algarve is by bus. After taking a taxi or bus into the city, you can catch the bus that takes you to Albufeira, Armação de Pêra, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos. So pretty much all the top destination in the Algarve! This bus is the best way to get around in the Algarve with public transport! Here you can see the times of that bus.

If you want to visit the famous caves of Benagil, you’re best off going to Carvoeiro for a boat tour from there! Carvoeiro is a cute little town and definitely worth a visit. To get from any of the other main destinations to Carvoeiro, just catch the bus mentioned above and get off at Lagoa. In Lagos, you can catch another bus that’ll take you to Carvoeiro. For times and prices, check this website.

BBQ Cruise in Portimão

Benagil is surely a highlight in the Algarve!

Sagres is also a very popular destination in the Algarve. From Lagos, you can easily catch another bus to Sagres, also run by the same company. Check the website mentioned above for timetables and hours! The famous Cabo de São Vicente is an amazing artwork designed by nature that you shouldn’t miss!

The Southwest point of Europe, Sagres

However, the best way to get around in the Algarve is by rental car! There are so many little towns and hidden bays that are best discovered on a road trip! And for renting a car in Portugal you pay reasonable prices. During high season, prices per day for a rental car start at around 50-55€. In low season, you can rent cars a lot cheaper. Just be aware that a lot of car rental companies ask for a deposit of 1.000€ on your credit card.

To get around in the Algarve by car, you can always choose to go on the freeway or the National Road (N125). The National Road is quite nice, but can get rather busy during summer months! Also, get ready for the biggest amount of roundabouts you’ll ever experience!

By rental car you're more independent

A rental car is the most independent way how to get around in the Algarve

If you decide to go on the freeway, you have to pay the tolls. For that, you can either get a transponder in your rental car for a small extra free. That’s the easiest way, because you don’t have to worry about anything and just pay the toll with the rental car company. If you don’t get a transponder, you can pay the tolls 2 days after driving on the freeway in a payshop. For this, you just need to know your license plate and then you pay with your bank card in a payshop or at a post office.

Luckily, most of the towns in the Algarve are so small that you can get around just by walking. There’s nothing better than walking around the esplanade during summer, stopping here and there for a nice ice-cream right? If you get too hot, you can also always go for a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic!

We hope we could help you with how to get around in the Algarve with this post! Enjoy your holidays in the South of Portugal.

The Western Algarve has some incredible attractions for individuals, couples and families alike, hence the increasing demand for private villa holidays and hotel accommodation. Silves

There is a reason why villa holidays in Silves prove very popular. In the town, you will see vibrant valleys of orange groves, with the focal point being the red sandstone castle standing high against the backdrop. Olhão Market

Olhão and Fish Markets

Visiting foreign food markets is always exciting for foodies and in the Algarve a focus is put on fish. Olhão has been famous for fishing since the middle ages and here you will find a fish market with over 80 stalls to browse. There are plenty of adorable cafes to stop for refreshment as you shop. Not only will you find a huge fish market in Olhao, you’ll find some of the most charming seafood restaurants in the world. Enjoy Fishing

As the Algarve is quite famous for fishing, why not enjoy some fishing yourself? You can go on a seafari, where you enjoy things like deep sea fishing and reef fishing. These activities are held on catamarans and yachts depending on what you prefer. There are a number of impressive caves to venture into, so the fish won’t be the only beautiful things you see on your outing.

The Algarve is one of the most incredible places you’ll ever visit, rife with amazing opportunities to explore!

Things to do in Olhão

Things to do in Olhão: the must do’s

By Femke Irik, co-founder and experience-tester at SeaBookings.

The Algarve is, in my opinion, the best region of Portugal for travel, especially for retirees. People may not think so but there are quite a few nice things to do in Olhão. I decided to share my favourite things to help you plan your holidays in Olhão.

Things to do in Olhão

The emblematic building of the Market of Olhão

Things to do in Olhão: the Olhão Market

The fishing vocation is very strong and Olhão is number 1. This makes the Olhão Market a must do on your holidays in Olhão.

The Olhão market is centuries old, located in a very beautiful and useful building.  It’s an amazing place to go to feel the Portuguese culture, architecture and lifestyle. There are several restaurant and bars in the area with stunning views over the Ria Formosa Nature Park.

In the Olhão market, you can find the freshest fish and vegetables. In my opinion, it’s the best place to buy fresh fish in the Algarve. The market is divided into 3 areas: the fish market, assorted meats, and one for the vegetable market.

On the vegetable market, you can buy fresh, organic and natural vegetables. The local farmers sell their vegetables and there is an explosion of typicality and fresh smells!

The markets are open every day from early in the morning till 1 or 2 pm. We recommend going on Saturday, as it’s the nicest and busiest day to feel the culture.

Fresher than this is impossible!

Fresher than this is impossible!

Things to do in Olhão: eat fish and seafood

The abundance of fish and seafood is combined with the Portuguese talent to turn them into absolutely amazing dishes makes this the place to go to taste the freshest fish. If you want to taste the real Portuguese dishes, you should have dinner at one of the restaurants in the area.

The best things to eat in Olhão, lunch or dinner will start with covert which includes bread, butter and some nice olives, sometimes even some local cheese or ham. As starters, what I recommend are the clams and mussels, fresher you won’t taste them. As the main dish, if you like fish, I would recommend sea bass (Robalo), octopus (Polvo), seabream (Dourada), sardines (Sardinhas) and horse mackerel (Carapaus). For the ones who prefer meat, I suggest a grilled meat dish (Grelhada Mista), which provides you with several kinds of meat

Some of the restaurants I recommend are:

  • In front of the fish market – Restaurante Prazeres
  • “Vai e Volta” – Fish dishes  – Largo do Gremio 2
  • Frango da Cidade – Rua Teofilo Braga 51 – For the best chicken in Olhão

Every year there is a seafood fair that is very successful in the region. On the seafood fair in Olhão, you can eat the best seafood and appreciate concerts from local singers every night. This year 2018, the seafood fair in Olhão will take place from the 10th to 15th of August.

The Ria Formosa is an amazing surrounding for fishing

The Ria Formosa is an amazing surrounding for fishing

Things to do in Olhão: visit Ria Formosa Nature Park

One thing to do you should definitely not miss is visiting the Ria Formosa. From Olhão, we provide several boat tours to explore the natural park of Ria Formosa.

The beautiful Ria Formosa is famous for the very specific habitat essential for many migratory species. I love this place, especially the tranquillity and silence it transmits.

One of the most famous islands of Ria Formosa is Ilha da Culatra,  where you can find amazing fishermen and local communities, restaurants and many things for kids to do and play. Nature and landscapes are paradisiacal. Together with the genuineness and typicality, you will feel welcomed by the local people.

dolphin watching from olhao

Dolphin watching is one of the best things to do in Olhão

Another popular Island is Ilha Deserta, far from the noise of the city, you can breathe the fresh air.  It’s a natural treasure in one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Portugal. An ideal place to walk in peace… to relax …  and do some sunbathing.

There are many ways to go to the islands, I recommend the private boat taxies, you can book them in advance, and agree on the best time for you and the tides. There are also several boat tours to explore the islands. Now the choice is up to you, do you want a quick boat tour or a full day, where there is time for a lunch at the Culatra island.

In Olhão, you can also do dolphin watching tours, they depart daily at 08:30. Don’t forget to book in advance, as these are quite popular. On the dolphin watching tours from Olhão, you will be searching for wild dolphins and observing them closely in their natural habitat.

All day tour - ria formosa - fuseta tour

The beach towns in Ria Formosa are very nice

Olhão is known for the authentic tourism, and with many things to do, it’s almost a must on your holidays in the Algarve. Let us know if you’ve got any further tips or need more information. We’re happy to help!

Portugal sail week 2018

10 questions about the Portugal Sail Week 2018

Interview with Portugal Sail Week 2018 – 10 questions to Duarte Ribeiro Soares about Portugal Sail Week 2018

Spending a week on a luxury yacht, surrounded by cool people from all over the world! Sunbathing all day, partying all night! And all of that in one of the most beautiful corners in Europe, the Algarve in Portugal! No doubt, Portugal Sail Week 2018 (PSW) is definitely going to be the best week of your life!

We had a chat with Duarte Ribeiro Soares, one of three partners organising the Portugal Sail Week 2018 about the event! Thanks to his experience in event planning, he will make sure that Portugal Sail Week 2018 will be a huge success. Wanna know what he has to say about the event? Here are his answers to 10 questions about Portugal Sail Week 2018!

Portugal Sail Week - Algarve 2018

The most unforgettable week of your life

  1. How did you come up with the idea to do a Sail Week in Portugal?

The PSW is a pioneer idea in Portugal. Similar events already exist a lot in Croatia, Montenegro, Italy and Greece. But we thought – why not do a Sail Week here in Portugal? We have the best beaches, the best weather and the best clubs. So really, Portugal is just one of the best countries for a Sail Week! Cheap, fun, and everyone likes Portuguese people! I like to say that Portugal “is an easy country”.

2. Why did you choose the Algarve?

Why Algarve? The question is really: Why would we do it anywhere else? In the Algarve, we have the best weather, a lot of seas to sail, and like I said earlier, the best beaches of Portugal! We think that the Algarve is one of the best destinations in Portugal. You don’t only have stunning beaches, but also a lot of different things to experience. You can find the two best clubs in Portugal (Bliss Vilamoura and LICK), magical sunsets, amazing cliffs and grottos, and much more that you can discover if you come to the Portugal Sail Week 2018!

Be impressed by the coastline of the Algarve

Be impressed by the coastline of the Algarve

3. What’s the spirit of PSW?

We tried to create a Yacht Festival that is different from all the other festivals in Portugal, like NOS Alive or Meo Sudoeste for example. We wanted to create something fun, unique and exciting! Our first day shows immediately what PSW is all about. Our goal is not to have a group of 6/8/10 friends on each yacht, but a group of 100 friends on all yachts together instead! Our motto of PSW is that “at the end of the week there are no friends, there is bonding, friendship, and soul mates that will cross borders from all over the world“. I think it’s something very special and inspiring!

4. What can people expect when they embark on PSW 2018?

An all-inclusive 7-day yacht festival to experience the best beaches, clubs and parties Algarve has to offer. Live like a true rock star aboard your personal yacht with six to ten of your friends.  This is the key of our 7-day program!

Crazy days, crazier nights!

Crazy days, crazier nights!

5. Is it true that they’re going to be influencers and bloggers on board?

Haha, the first surprise is revealed! Yes, there are going to be influencers and bloggers on board of the yachts. We have guests like Lotti Moss, Lillie Lexis, Charlie Barker, Jessica Anne Woodley and Sharam Dinis. We are trying to raise the level of Portugal Sail Week 2018, and really put it on the top of the list of all events in Portugal!

6. How wild do the parties really get? 😉

You need to come and live them, not imagine them 😉 But just to give you an impression: We don’t pay any entrance in any club in Algarve and with us, you are all VIPs during Portugal Sail Week 2018!

VIP access to the best clubs in the Algarve? Check!

VIP access to the best clubs in the Algarve? Check!

7. What’s your favourite stop in the Algarve?

I personally think Vilamoura is one of the best stops. That’s also why we stop there twice! Vilamoura is right in the centre of our route and of course the two best clubs of the Algarve are there. But I also really love the island Ilha Deserta, it’s like paradise!

8. Where are the people from who join the PSW?

We were contacted by people from all over the world: Miami, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Tel Aviv, London, Aberdeen and much more. So I think that it will be a really nice mix of international people who will all fall in love with Portugal!

The Deluxe Catamaran has enough space for 10 people

The Deluxe Catamaran has enough space for 10 people

9. What is an essential thing to bring to PSW?

I was tempted to say boardshorts, but we offer one for each guy in our welcome kit (DCK boardshorts), and with that a beach towel (FUTAH). And the ladies don’t need to worry about bringing their stylish towels, because we offer them a FUTAH beach towel too! And on top of that, they get a CAIA beach pillow. So, I think we just need your good mood and willingness to enjoy Portugal Sail Week 2018!

10. Is there something else you wanna say about PSW?

Take advantage while we still have a few yachts available, because soon they will be booked out and you might miss out on the best week of your life! 😉

If you have any more question or want to book the best week of your life, send an email to [email protected]! Come aboard of one of the most exclusive events in Portugal!
